An Exciting Day

When every day largely resembles the last, including the view, the destination, and the participants, you’re happy when something different happens for a change. After days of nothing but sun and temperatures of at least 30 degrees (indoors, out of the sun), we’re surprised by a few showers. At first, they’re light, but around 11 o’clock, a dark cloud formation begins to appear in the sky.

We put the second reef in the mainsail and the mizzen, put on our swim trunks or bikinis, and head straight for the squall. A refreshing shower is our reward. A little later, it’s dry again, and there’s a nice breeze. The sun stays behind the clouds, and for the first time in ages, it’s quite pleasant inside the saloon with about 29 degrees and a breeze flowing through the ship from aft to bow.

In the afternoon, two boobies fly along with the ship for hours. Even those who aren’t really bird lovers, let alone experts, like me, are entertained by the birds. They are related to gannets and constantly dive into the water, hunting for flying fish. It’s funny to see how the flying fish ‘run’ for their lives to escape the birds. Some with more success than others…

In terms of wildlife, it’s a busy day anyway, because this morning an enormous school of dolphins already passed by. Steadily, the group moved from port to starboard, passing in front of the ship. According to mate Peter, there were at least 50 of them. Hopefully, they’ll come back to check things out this week or next.
