Step Aboard the Sailing Ship Baltic

Sailing on the sturdy two-masted sailing ship Baltic is sporty, safe, and enjoyable. Thanks to its weight, hull shape, and sail plan, the ship is stable in the water. With a maximum of 8 people on board, you truly become part of the expedition. You actively participate in sailing while also enjoying life at sea and along the coasts. Photography, reading a book in the modern salon, or preparing a meal in the galley – all of this is possible.

The Baltic was built according to a design by the famous naval architect Colin Archer. In the late 19th century, he designed the ship Fram for the polar expeditions of Norwegian explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen. At that time, Colin Archer also designed boats for the Norwegian rescue service and a wooden racing yacht for the Danish royal family, the Vesta. The design of the Baltic is based on this latter ship.

The Interior of the Baltic

The Baltic is specially equipped for expeditions in the Arctic and North Atlantic. The pilothouse, which spans part of the cockpit, offers panoramic views through its large windows. It can be closed off at the rear, making it comfortable even in low temperatures. A navigation corner is set up here on the starboard side.

The ship has 3 double guest cabins, each with its own shower and toilet (en suite). There is also a sauna on board. The salon features a cozy seating area with a small library, a navigation table, and a galley. From there, you can access the aft quarters for the crew.

Our Sailing Ship’s Refit

We purchased the Baltic in May 2018, after it had been moored in Muiderzand for over 10 years. After a seven-year refit period, a new future awaits this beautiful, robust ship. A new cockpit was installed, and we added a deckhouse amidships. The solid wooden masts that were originally on it have been replaced with aluminum profile masts. The interior has been completely refitted, and all tanks, pumps, piping, electrical systems, and more have been renewed and meet the highest standards.

Furthermore, we continue to explore how we can equip the ship as sustainably as possible. You can read about the choices we have made or are going to make in this comprehensive blog: Sustainability Aboard the Baltic.
