Tromsø is often called the Paris of the North, due to its beautiful light and lively atmosphere. We’ve compiled a list of Tromsø’s best ‘attractions’.
1 Go on a dog sledding tour
The Tromsø Wilderness Centre offers wonderful husky sledding tours. You’ll venture out with a sled and a team of dogs, and learn all about how these animals live and are trained. A must for animal lovers. If there’s no snow, you can go on a husky hike instead of a sledding tour.

2 Take the cable car for a spectacular view of the Troms Fjord
“If you’re in Tromsø, you must visit the Fjellheisen cable car. You can’t get a better view of Tromsø. It’s also an ideal spot to see the Northern Lights over the city at night,” says an enthusiastic Norway traveler. This ‘attraction’ even received a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor. Easily accessible from the city, on foot or by bus.

3 Watch a film in the world’s oldest cinema
In Storgata, Tromsø’s main street, you’ll find this cinema from 1915. It’s the oldest cinema in the world where you can still watch (arthouse) films every day. Both the building and the film programming are truly worthwhile. Also great for just a drink in the foyer or on the terrace.

4 Relive the adventures of Amundsen, Nansen, and other polar explorers
The Polar Museum might seem like a cabinet of curiosities, but it offers a nearly complete picture of Norwegian expeditions to the polar regions (Svalbard, Greenland, Jan Mayen) and life in harsh conditions. Ship models, clothing, fur animals, and overwintering huts are accompanied by extensive stories and background information. A good preparation for a (boat) trip to the far north.

5 Take a boat trip through the fjords
The Norwegian coast, and certainly the Troms region, is a succession of fjords and islands. The mountains and rock faces are most impressive from the water. Between May 21 and July 21, it also stays light 24 hours a day, offering a beautiful and photogenic view of this immense landscape even at midnight. Along the way, you might encounter sea eagles, puffins, cormorants, seals, dolphins, and – along the coastline – reindeer. The ideal way to experience this magnificent nature.
