The Lofoten & Vesterålen: The journey from day to day
We have put together a varied route for you along the most beautiful islands of Lofoten and Vesterålen. This itinerary is only a suggestion for how the trip might go. Where exactly we are heading and how long the distances we are going to cover will be, depend on the weather and the wind.
Day 1: At the end of the afternoon you step a board the ship in the harbour of Bodø. While enjoying a drink, you get to know your travel companions and the crew. We will show you around the ship, so that you will quickly feel at home. A delicious meal will be prepared for you on board. After dinner, it is time for a safety briefing and you will hear about the sailing plans for tomorrow.
Day 2: After breakfast we let go of the ropes and sail out of the harbour. Together we hoist the sails and if you like you can help steer. We first sail up the Norwegian coast for a few hours and then make the crossing to the Lofoten. Along the way you will learn everything about how to sail a seagoing vessel, how to take soundings on, for example, a lighthouse or how to trim the sails. At the end of this sailing day we moor in one of the beautiful harbours of the Lofoten, for example in the Nussfjord or Henningsvaer.
Day 3: Today we set course for one of the most special places in Lofoten: the famous Trollfjord. You only see the narrow entrance to the famous fjord when we are very close to it. Slowly we sail inside. The mountain wall rises almost perpendicularly from the water. We moor at the back of the fjord. You can walk along the waterline or take a tough trip through the mountains. Or put on your swimsuit for a refreshing dip in the fjord. In any case, your camera will be working overtime. For bird watchers, this is one of the best places to spot sea eagles!
Day 4: After breakfast we slowly sail out of the Trollfjord. We’re heading out port, towards the north. It’s the 21st of June, the longest day of the year. And we will take full advantage of all those hours of daylight. Our route goes along deserted islands and rocky coasts. In the middle of the afternoon we arrive in Sortland, the main town of the Vesterålen archipelago. At the stroke of midnight we celebrate this very special ‘Midsummer Night’ together. The glasses and snacks will be around on the aft deck for a long time… while you don’t see the sun go down.
Day 5: When everyone is awake we sail further north. Our destination today is Andenes, at the northernmost tip of the mountainous island of Andoya. Andenes is located on the edge of the Vesterålen. An excellent spot for whale watching…
Day 6: Today we stay all day in Andenes. You have the option to visit the Polar Museum or the Whale Center in town. Or maybe you find the exhibition about the Northern Lights interesting. If possible, we cast off in the afternoon and go in search of whales or birds near Andoya.
Day 7: Today we hoist the sails and set course to the east. The water here is wide and directly connected to the Arctic Ocean. There is a good chance that we will encounter whales along the way. Our destination is the village of Hamn on the west coast of the island of Senja. Senja is Norway’s second largest island. It’s nature is so varied that you can see almost the entire collection of Norwegian landscapes.
Day 8: Hamn is an old fishing and trading village. Today you have every opportunity to discover the beautiful island of Senja. You can climb the old lighthouse for a spectacular view. Or take the bus for a tour of Senja. Visit the National Park or stroll through the traditional fishing villages along the coast. Those who really want to take it easy can enjoy the sauna in the harbour of Hamn.
Day 9: After breakfast we leave the harbour and head south. We sail for hours along the beautiful fjord coast of Senja. After a long day of sailing we reach Harstad. Harstad is the second largest city in the region after Tromsø. The city was founded more than 100 years ago, but there are already traces of habitation from the Bronze Age. The city has a rich and sometimes bloody history. The place was an important crossroads in the Viking Age and enthusiasts will enjoy themselves here. Harstad is still a lively place where it is good to stay.
Day 10: The day starts with a delicious breakfast and then it’s time to pack your things. After 10 wonderful days sailing between the many islands of Lofoten and Vesterålen, it is time to say goodbye to your companions and travel back home. Or maybe you’ll stay on the island for a few more days to enjoy the pleasant life above the Arctic Circle a little longer. In any case, you will have a lot to tell at home.
