Biscay is treating us well. Contrary to expectations, the wind remains very favorable, and although we’re dealing with some swells from a depression further out in the ocean, the crossing is calm. The ship glides smoothly over the waves, and we move quietly from watch to watch. <\/p>\n
We even have a full day of sun and realize this will likely be the last sunny, or at least warm, day of this trip. With every degree increase in northern latitude, the temperature on the thermometer is expected to drop, so it’s quite special to be able to walk around in shorts on the Bay of Biscay in late November. <\/p>\n
We’re torn\u2026 do we take beautiful, sunny photos now to make everyone back home jealous? This obviously makes it extra hard to tell tall tales later about the hardships of the crossing. I’m choosing the former; I’ll come up with something for the stories later\u2026 <\/p>\n
As we count down the miles remaining to Harlingen, we discuss roughly how much longer it will take to get there. Of course, that’s hard to estimate without an accurate weather forecast and with over 700 miles still to go. Reason enough for everyone to take a gamble. A betting pool is quickly set up on a piece of paper, followed by heavy speculation and calculations. I’m betting on Thursday at 8:30 PM, taking a short stop somewhere into account. We’ll see! <\/p>\n
After two days of sailing, we finally reach the English Channel. New internet connections can be established and fresh weather reports are streaming in. They promise strong headwinds for the Channel, leading our captain to decide on an extra stop, likely for two days. There goes my chance of winning the pool. But it’s cool!
