The wind keeps playing with us and keeps us on our toes. One moment we have to head off, and sometimes we even have to take everything down because it’s better to motor into the wind after all. We do have to head west, after all…

Just like the wind, the weather also alternates, with clear moments and thunderstorms. The sea remains virtually empty of other ships. Although it stays bizarre that you still end up on a collision course with a small sailing yacht in the middle of the ocean, while there are a few hundred miles of open water on all sides. It certainly keeps your watch interesting.

The Ibiza Lighthouse

Three days later, the coast of Ibiza finally appears on the charts. During a beautiful clear night, we see the first light from the tower in northern Ibiza. This gives us a great chance to practice an exercise from our maritime school instructor Eef Willems (duck and run). By looking up the height and range of the light, we can determine that we can use the distance to and bearing of the lighthouse to establish our position and plot it on the chart. Without using GPS. Very cool.

Realizing that this is already the last watch for the first leg of the trip, I crawl into my bunk feeling satisfied. A few hours later, I wake up to the sound of a rattling anchor chain.
